I’m a journalist. How can I get data for a story I’m working on?

Email your request to press@secondmeasure.com. Please include the name of your publication, your deadline, the companies you’re interested in, and a brief description of your story. One of our editorial staff members will contact you. If we are able to help with your inquiry, we will email the data to you in an Excel file. You are also welcome to cite data from the stories on our Data Points blog.


What is Bloomberg Second Measure?

Bloomberg Second Measure is a leading provider of transaction data analytics that reliably deliver valuable insights into company performance and consumer trends. Some of the world’s largest investment firms and consumer brands use Bloomberg Second Measure’s proprietary analytics for daily tracking of thousands of public and private companies.


How recent is your data?

Reporters can access data from as early as 2017 and as recent as a week ago.


Do you track international sales?

No. We only observe sales made by U.S. consumers.


Do you have purchase data for privately held companies?

Yes.


Are there types of payments you don’t observe?

We don’t see payments made using cash, check, ACH, EBT or gift cards. We don’t track corporate spending. If a third-party retailer sells a product or service, the sale will be attributed to the retailer. (For example, the sale of Nike shoes at Foot Locker would be attributed to Foot Locker, not Nike.)


Can you provide information about spending trends in specific cities or states?

At this time, we are only able to provide data at the national level.


Do you have industry-level data available?

No, we only have merchant-level data available.


Do you have product-level data available?

We only have merchant-level data available and cannot isolate purchase data at the product level.


Can you provide a comment for my story?

Our team is happy to answer any questions you might have about the data, but Bloomberg Second Measure does not have any industry analysts on staff, and we do not comment on business or investment implications of our data.
